Cubic Yards Calculator

Cubic yards is how bulk material — concrete, gravel, topsoil, mulch — is sold and delivered, and it is simply volume measured in yard-sized units. Measure the area you are filling in feet, pick a depth, and the calculator multiplies length × width × depth to get cubic feet, then divides by 27 to land on cubic yards. The 27 comes from the shape of a cubic yard itself: it is three feet on every side, and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet.

Depth is usually given in inches while length and width come in feet, so the depth is divided by 12 before the multiply. Switch the toggle to metric and the same volume returns in cubic meters — length × width × depth straight in meters — with the cubic-yard figure kept beside it so you can order from a supplier who quotes either system. Round up when you order: yards are delivered in full or half increments, material settles and spills, and a little extra beats waiting on a second load.
