Price per square foot turns a lump-sum cost into a rate you can compare. Divide the total cost by the area it covers and you get dollars per square foot. A `$1,000` job over `500` square feet works out to `$2.00` per square foot. That single number lets you line up quotes of different sizes, judge whether a flooring price is fair, or compare the cost of two houses that are not the same size.

The calculator keeps the area in exact terms and also reports dollars per square meter, since materials and listings sometimes quote metric.
