Should I use 4×8 or 4×12 sheets?

4 × 12 sheets cover more per piece and leave fewer joints to finish, which is why pros prefer them on long walls and ceilings. 4 × 8 sheets are lighter and easier to handle solo in small rooms and stairwells. Both finish the same square footage.

How much joint compound and tape will I need?

For a standard tape plus three-coat finish, budget about 0.14 lb of ready-mix compound and 0.37 ft of tape per square foot of board. The 528 sq ft example needs roughly 74 lb of compound and 195 ft of tape — about one 250 ft roll.

How many screws per sheet?

Roughly one screw per square foot at 12" spacing on ceilings and 16" on walls — about 32 screws for a 4 × 8 sheet. Buy a bit extra; some always strip or miss the framing.

How it works

Drywall starts with board area. The walls are the room perimeter times the ceiling height, and the ceiling adds length times width. Openings around doors and windows are counted as board, not deducted — you hang the full sheet and cut the hole out afterward, and the cut piece is waste. Add about `10 %` for that waste plus breakage, then divide by the sheet size to get sheets. A `4 × 8` sheet is `32 sq ft`; a `4 × 12` is `48 sq ft`.

The finishing materials scale with the board area. Using the USG estimating figures, plan on about `0.14 lb` of ready-mix joint compound per square foot for a tape-and-three-coat finish, roughly `0.37` linear feet of joint tape per square foot, and about one drywall screw per square foot at the standard `12"`/`16"` fastening spacing.

Fewer, larger sheets mean fewer joints to tape, which is faster and looks better — but `4 × 12` sheets are heavy and hard to maneuver in tight rooms. Sheets, compound, and screws all round up to whole purchasable units.

Add the wall area (perimeter × height) and the ceiling (length × width), add 10 % waste, and divide by the sheet size. A 12 × 12 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling is 528 sq ft of board — 19 sheets of 4 × 8.
