Finishing drywall takes joint compound (mud) and paper tape, and both scale with the board area, not just the joint length — every coat is spread across the seams and screw dimples over the whole surface. Enter the board area from the drywall calculator and pick a finish level, and this tool estimates the compound and tape.

Compound is the bigger number. Using the USG carton estimate, ready-mix all-purpose compound runs about 0.047 lb per square foot per coat, so a standard tape-plus-two-coat Level 4 finish (three passes) is about 0.14 lb per square foot — which lines up with a 4.5 gal carton finishing roughly 450 sq ft. Ready-mix weighs about 13.7 lb per gallon, so the tool also reports gallons and cartons. Tape runs about 0.37 linear ft per square foot of board, sold in 250 ft and 500 ft rolls.

A Level 5 finish adds a skim coat over everything and uses noticeably more mud; bump the coats to "tape + 3" for that. All counts round to whole cartons and rolls, because that is how you buy them.

Worked example
Board area 500 sq ft · tape + 2 coats (3 passes) · +0%
compound = 500 × 0.047 × 3 = 70.5 lb ≈ 5.2 gal (2 × 4.5-gal cartons)
tape = 500 × 0.37 = 185 ft ≈ 1 roll (250 ft)

About 0.14 lb per square foot of board for a standard tape-and-three-coat finish — roughly 70 lb, or 5 gal, per 500 sq ft. A skim-coated Level 5 finish uses more; pick "tape + 3" to add a pass.
