Landscape Edging: Sections, Stakes & Total Length

Edging is bought by the length, so the whole job comes down to measuring the run. For a bed you enclose completely, the run is the perimeter — twice the length plus twice the width. For a straight border along a path or driveway, it is simply the length of that edge. The calculator takes whichever you choose, divides by the length of one edging section or coil to get the number of pieces, and divides by the stake spacing to get the anchor stakes.

Edging comes in fixed lengths — commonly eight-foot coils and sixteen- or twenty-foot strips — and both the section count and stake count round up, since you cannot buy part of a coil or leave the last foot unstaked. Manufacturers typically call for a stake every three feet or so, plus one at each joint and on tight curves.

Add a section if your bed has sharp curves, since curved runs eat a little more material than a straight measurement suggests.
