How it works

Pavers are counted from area, not volume. The calculator multiplies the patio length by its width to get the surface area, then divides by the face area of a single paver to find how many cover the space. A 4-by-8-inch paver has a face of 32 square inches, and since a square foot is 144 square inches, that works out to a tidy 4.5 pavers per square foot — the number the industry quotes.

Real installations lose pavers to cuts along curves, borders, and any angled pattern, so a waste allowance is added on top of the exact count. Five percent covers a simple grid or running bond; herringbone and other diagonal layouts cut more pavers and want ten percent. The final number is always rounded up to a whole paver, because you cannot buy part of one.

Because pavers are ordered by the pallet, it is worth rounding your final count up to a sensible pallet quantity and keeping a few spares for future repairs.

Questions from the patio
It depends on the paver's face. A 4×8 in paver gives 4.5 per square foot, a 6×6 in gives 4, a 6×9 in gives 2.67, and a 12×12 in gives exactly 1. The tool derives this from the size you pick.
