Asphalt is bought by weight, not volume, so estimating a paving job is two steps: find the volume of the compacted mat, then convert it to tons using the material's density. Volume is simply area times compacted thickness. The calculator multiplies your length by width for the area, multiplies by the thickness you enter, and works entirely in SI internally before converting back to the units you chose.

The density it uses is the standard figure for dense-graded hot-mix asphalt: about 145 pounds per cubic foot compacted, which is 2322 kilograms per cubic meter, or roughly 2 US tons per cubic yard. That is the NAPA and Asphalt Institute rule of thumb, so a mat with a known compacted volume converts straight to tonnage. Because a plant sells by the ton, the calculator reports both US tons and metric tonnes, with weight in pounds and kilograms alongside.

One thing to watch: thickness must be the compacted thickness, not the loose depth the paver lays down. Hot mix loses roughly a quarter of its loose depth when rolled, so if you plan around loose lifts add a compaction allowance. A driveway is typically 2 to 3 inches compacted over a compacted aggregate base.

volume = 480 × (2 ÷ 12) = 80 cu ft = 2.27 m³
weight = 80 × 145 = 11,600 lb ≈ 11,596 lb (2322 kg/m³) = 5,260 kg
tons = 11,596 ÷ 2000 = 5.8 US tons = 5.26 tonnes

Multiply area by compacted thickness for the volume, then by density. At 145 lb/ft³, one cubic yard of compacted hot mix weighs about 2 US tons. A 480 sq ft driveway paved 2″ thick is 80 cu ft — about 5.8 US tons.
