Concrete is heavy, and the weight is what matters when you have to move it: sizing a dumpster or dump trailer for a demolition, checking that a truck or floor can carry a load, or estimating the disposal fee, which is usually billed by the ton. The weight is simply the volume of the concrete times its density.
Standard normal-weight concrete runs about 2,400 kilograms per cubic meter, or roughly 150 pounds per cubic foot — so a cubic foot of cured slab weighs about as much as a large bag of dog food, and a full cubic yard comes in around two tons. The calculator finds your pour's volume from length × width × thickness, multiplies by the density, and reports the result four ways: pounds, US short tons, kilograms, and metric tonnes.
If your mix is structural lightweight concrete — made with expanded shale or clay aggregate — switch the mix type. Lightweight runs about 1,840 kilograms per cubic meter, roughly a quarter less than normal-weight, which is why it shows up in upper floors and long spans where dead load is the enemy.
