Crushed stone — the dense, angular aggregate used under slabs, driveways, and patios — is quoted by the ton and by the cubic yard. This calculator finds both. It multiplies length by width for the area, multiplies by depth for a volume, and multiplies that volume by the weight per cubic yard to convert to tons. Depth in inches is divided by twelve so it lines up with the feet used for area.

The weight step uses a density of about 1.35 tons per cubic yard, the common figure for dense-graded crushed stone. Crusher-run and #57 stone sit close to this, but a wet or unusually fine gradation weighs more, so the delivered ticket is the number to trust.

Crushed stone is meant to be compacted, which is why a base course is built in lifts and tamped. A ten-percent waste allowance covers the volume lost to compaction and an uneven subgrade; leave it at zero only for a loose decorative fill.
