How it works
A filter can only clean water so fast. Each media type has a published **design flow rate** — the most water it should pass per square foot of filter area while still trapping dirt. Push more through than that and debris blows straight past. So the minimum filter area is your pump's flow divided by the media's design rate.
The rates differ dramatically. High-rate sand runs about 15 gallons per minute per square foot, diatomaceous earth (DE) about 2, and cartridge only about 0.375. That is why a cartridge filter for the same pump looks huge next to a sand tank — it needs far more area because it filters much more finely and slowly. A 60 GPM pump needs about 4 ft² of sand but around 160 ft² of cartridge element.
Size the filter to your pump, then go bigger if you can. A larger filter runs longer between cleanings, keeps flow up, and lets you drop pump speed to save energy. Match the filter to the pump's real flow at your plumbing, and follow the manufacturer's rated capacity — these design rates are the industry planning figures.
