A pool stays clear when all its water passes through the filter regularly. One full pass is a **turnover**, and the time for one turnover is simply your pool volume divided by the pump's flow rate. At 50 gallons per minute a pump moves 3,000 gallons an hour, so a 20,000 gallon pool turns over once in about 6.7 hours.

Most residential pools aim for at least one turnover a day; one to two is common. Multiply the turnover time by your target and you have the daily run time. You do not have to run it all at once — splitting the schedule into a couple of blocks is fine, since it is the total hours that count.

Use your pump's real flow at your plumbing, not its nameplate maximum — head loss from pipes and the filter lowers it. A variable-speed pump changes the whole picture: running slower moves less water per minute but uses far less energy, so longer hours at low speed usually beat short bursts at high speed.

turnover = 20,000 ÷ (50 × 60) = 6.7 h
daily run = 1 × 6.7 = 6.7 h

Enough for your turnover target. At 50 GPM, a 20,000 gal pool needs about 6.7 hours for one turnover, so run 7–13 hours a day for one to two turnovers. Warmer weather and heavy use push you toward the higher end.
