Sheet goods cover a fixed area, so the count is the area you need to cover divided by the coverage of one panel. A standard `4×8` sheet is `32` square feet; the longer `4×10` and `4×12` panels cover `40` and `48`. Divide your total area by that number and you have the bare minimum sheet count before any allowance.

Real jobs never lay out on a perfect grid. Cuts around openings, ends that do not land on a `4`-foot line, and the offcuts you cannot reuse all add up, so a waste allowance of `10` to `15` percent is normal for subfloor, sheathing, and roof decking. The tool adds your chosen allowance to the area, divides by the panel coverage, and rounds up — you buy whole sheets, and a spare panel beats a second trip.

Enter the area as a length and a width, pick your panel size, and set a waste allowance. The tool returns the number of sheets and the padded area. It counts by area, which is right for floors, walls, and roofs sheathed edge to edge; it does not lay out a specific stagger pattern or account for panels you can cut from a single offcut, so on a small or oddly shaped job the by-hand layout may save a sheet.

Worked example
Area 20 ft × 16 ft = 320 sq ft · 4×8 sheets (32 sq ft) · +10% waste
area with waste = 320 × 1.10 = 352 sq ft
sheets = 352 ÷ 32 = 11.0 → 11 sheets
Divide the area to cover by the coverage of one panel — 32 square feet for a 4×8 — and round up, adding 10 to 15 percent for waste. A 320 square foot area at 4×8 with 10 percent waste comes to 11 sheets. Larger panels cover more per sheet, so fewer are needed.
