Home charging loses a little energy as heat, so metered kWh runs slightly above what reaches the battery. A cheap overnight time-of-use rate lowers the real cost.

Charging an electric car at home is cheap and easy to estimate because you pay for exactly what goes in — kilowatt-hours at your electricity rate. A single session costs the kWh added times your price per kWh. To turn that into a cost you can compare with gasoline, the calculator uses your car's efficiency, rated by the EPA in kWh per `100` miles, and your price per kWh to get a cost per mile.

From there, monthly cost is just your driving distance times that cost per mile. Enter miles per month (or switch to kilometers with the unit toggle) and the tool shows both the monthly kWh your car pulls from the wall and what that adds to your electricity bill. Because energy per mile and the cost per mile are physical, per-distance figures, the results show the other-system equivalent — cost per mile alongside cost per kilometer.

Two real-world notes. Home charging loses a little energy as heat, so metered kWh at the wall runs slightly above what reaches the battery; using your charger's or utility's kWh reading captures that. And rates vary — a time-of-use plan that is cheap overnight, exactly when most people charge, can cut the cost meaningfully.

session cost = `40 kWh` × `$0.15` = `$6.00`
cost per mile = (`30` ÷ `100`) × `$0.15` = `$0.045/mi` (`$0.028/km`)
monthly energy = (`30` ÷ `100`) × `1,000 mi` = `300 kWh`
monthly cost = `300 kWh` × `$0.15` = `$45.00`
Multiply the kWh you add by your electricity price. Adding 40 kWh at $0.15 is $6.00 for that session. Over a month of 1,000 miles at 30 kWh/100 mi, the car uses 300 kWh and costs about $45.00 to charge — usually a fraction of the gasoline bill for the same driving.
