This tool puts a year of driving on electricity next to the same year on gasoline. For the EV, it takes your annual distance and efficiency in kWh per `100` miles, multiplies to get the kWh you use, and prices that at your electricity rate. For the gas car, it divides your miles by your fuel economy to get gallons, then prices those at the pump. The difference is your annual savings — positive means the EV is cheaper to run.

The comparison is built on a per-mile cost for each, which makes the gap easy to see at any mileage. Switch to metric with the unit toggle and every distance-based figure follows: distance in kilometers, efficiency in kWh per `100 km`, fuel economy in liters per `100 km`, fuel price per liter, and cost shown per kilometer. Because these are physical per-distance quantities, the results also show the other-system equivalent.

This covers fuel and electricity only — the running cost, which is where EVs usually win. It does not include purchase price, insurance, maintenance (typically lower for EVs), or public fast-charging, which costs more than home power. For a full ownership picture, weigh those alongside the energy savings this tool isolates.

Worked example
Driving `12,000 mi/yr` · EV `30 kWh/100 mi` at `$0.15/kWh` · gas `28 mpg` at `$3.50/gal`
EV cost = `12,000` × (`30` ÷ `100`) × `$0.15` = `$540/yr` (`$0.045/mi`)
gas cost = `12,000` ÷ `28` × `$3.50` = `$1,500/yr` (`$0.125/mi`)
savings = `$1,500` − `$540` = `$960/yr`
On fuel, almost always. Driving 12,000 miles a year, an EV at 30 kWh/100 mi and $0.15/kWh costs about $540, while a 28 mpg car at $3.50 a gallon costs $1,500 — a $960 yearly gap. The advantage grows with higher gas prices, cheaper electricity, and more miles driven.
